Gambians have extended call to president-elect Adama Barrow to address the high cost of household staple as the price of rice has risen exponentially.

Barrow, who won a landslide victory last Saturday, has promised the nation that  his administration’s will tackle the high cost of basic food commodities by investing heavily in agricultural production.

Vegetable vendor, Jaiteh Touray, said: “we wanted Barrow to reduce the price of rice and he did not do but now that he is being reelected he should do it for us.”

“Let him have sympathy for the families because many families are under the care of the women, and we are the ones suffering,” she added.

Another vegetable seller, Fatou Manneh, also said: “now we have made President Barrow win the election so our concern is for him to make better living conditions and reduce the price of commodities for us.”

Fatoumatta Dumbuya laments the high food price and said she finds it hard to now buy a bag of rice for her family.

“We cannot buy a bag of rice despite I have been selling in the market for the past 20 years but the difficulties we have faced in the past 5 years we have never experienced in the country,” she said.
