Gambians from all walks of life have been mourning the death of veteran musician, Oussou Njie Senor.

The doyen of Gambian music died on Tuesday night aged 77.

Njie Senor who was born in Banjul rose to fame as part of the iconic Super Eagles band in the 70s. 

The band travelled widely in the 80s to perform and helped inspired a generation of musicians from the Senegambia region including Youssou Ndour. 

The legendary musician, composer and producer has been at the centre of Gambian music scene for over 50 years. 

Njie Senor has produced several hit songs including “Mandal ly”, “Gambia Sunu Rew, “Viva Super Eagles” and ” Haleli Africa”.

Gambians took to social media to pay their respect to the veteran musician.

“The legendary Oussou Njie Senor rests. He was truly a Gambian icon and greatest musician of our time. Rest in perfect peace Oussou Njie Senor. He was a true gentleman. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” one of the mourners said on Twitter.

Another mourner tweeted: “Very sad news of the demise of a LEGEND Oussou Njie, May Allah Almighty Forgive Him and Grant him Janatul Firdawsi. The whole country is in mourning and my sincere condolences to the bereaved family in the Gambia. REST IN PEACE.”

“May Allah forgive him for any shortcomings and grant him a place in Jannahtul Firdaus. OUSSOU Njie was one of the pillars of Gambian music. From the late 60’s to end of 70’s, Super Eagles dominated the music scene of Senegambia. 

“Senegalese were dependent on music from Gambia. I was a young teacher then and my generation is always proud of Super Eagles and Gelewar,” another one also said, describing him as a “great person”.
