Alhagie Alieu Momar Njai, the chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, has retired after overseeing two national elections.

Mr Njai took the role from Mustapha L. Careyol a few months before the 2016 presidential election, which saw Gambians vote out former President Yahya Jammeh, who had ruled the country for 22 years.

Following his retirement, his son, Momodou Alieu Njai took to social media to thank Gambians and staff members of electoral body for their trust in his father to man the position throughout the years.

“Our sincere gratitude to the IEC staff for a wonderful farewell today March 6th. I heard about the tears of joy and gratitude from the staff! Doing good is only what matters in life.

“Thank you Alhagie Alieu Momarr Njai for your service to country. Wishing the IEC all the best to uphold its Independence, and fairness! May the next Chairman/Chairwoman be impartial, and defend the will of the people,” he wrote.
