Dr. Mamadou Tangara, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, has officially resigned from his post to take up a new position with the African Union.

According to a government statement, Tangara submitted his resignation letter to President Adama Barrow earlier this week. The president has accepted the resignation and thanked Dr. Tangara for his dedication, professionalism, and years of service.

“President Barrow extends his gratitude to Honourable Tangara and wishes him continued success in his future endeavours,” the statement read.

Tangara served as Gambia’s Foreign Minister from 2018 to 2025, playing a key role in shaping the country’s diplomatic engagements during a pivotal period of its democratic transition.

He has now been appointed as the African Union Commission’s Special Representative of the Chairperson in Mali and the Sahel, and will head the AU’s MISAHEL office in Bamako, Mali.
