Ebrima Nyang has resigned as Administrative Secretary 1 of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), citing concerns over the party’s alliance with the National People’s Party (NPP).

In a resignation letter dated Sunday, 20 September 2026, Nyang said his decision followed “long, deep and painful reflection”. He argued that the alliance could undermine the principle of presidential term limits and potentially enable prolonged presidential rule.

Nyang said he could not support an alliance that, in his view, risked prioritising political power over democratic principles and national development.

He also criticised the government of President Adama Barrow, citing what he described as economic challenges, a fragile security situation, corruption, failing public institutions, inflation and rising prices.

“This decision, though difficult, aligns with my unwavering commitment to prioritising the national interest above personal considerations,” Nyang said.

He said his resignation was intended to uphold his integrity and commitment to democratic principles.

Nyang thanked the GDC for the opportunity to serve and said the experience and knowledge gained during his time with the party had been invaluable.

He wished the party and its members success in their future endeavours.
