A senior official of the opposition Gambia Democrat Congress has said the ruling party, National People’s Party, has no candidate who can win a seat in the upcoming local government elections.
Gambian voters will head back to the polls in May to elect their new councillors, mayors and chairpersons to the run the affairs of their local areas.
However, the ruling National People’s Party has come under criticism from the opposition after President Barrow set up a commission to investigate the local government administrations.
The opposition described it as “political witch-hunt” commission targeting mayors and chairpersons from the opposition parties.
Momodou MC Cham Jnr told Gambiana that the commission is “politically motivated to witch-hunt the local councils”.
“NPP has no candidate who can win election. So, Gambians should not fall for their trap. This kind of politics is not clean. How can you appoint your party members as commissioners,” he said.
“I don’t dislike fighting corruption but let it be based on justice. Setting up of commission should not be just pick and choose,” he added.
