The National Human Rights Commission has completed its investigation into torture allegations against the head of Police Anti-crime Unit Gorgi Mboob and recommended disciplinary actions to be taken against the police chief.
In July one Ebrima Sanneh of Brikama, who was arrested for flouting lockdown restrictions, alleged that he was tortured while in detention by Gorgi Mboob including hitting him on his genitals with a hoe. Mr Mboob however the denied the allegations.
Following a national outcry a joint investigation was launched into the torture allegations led by the country’s National Human Rights Commission.
“The Inspector General of Police to take disciplinary measures against Commissioner Gorgi Mboob, and that the Inspector General of Police to consider his redeployment from the Anti-Crime Unit,” the Commission said in its investigation report.
The Commission also recommend “the police to pay monetary compensation to Ebrima Sanneh for wrongfully inflicted pain and suffering.”
Police chief Gorgi Mboob has been redeployed to Farafeeni which attracted much criticisms among human rights activists who are demanding his prosecution and dismissal from the police force.
Mr Mboob was advserly mentioned by witnesses who appeared before the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission for commuting human rights abuses during the April 10/11 2000 students protests — which claimed lives and injured scores of others.
