The Gambia Government has been urged to build small factories across the country and include skills into the nation’s education curriculum to help tackle rising poverty in the country.

Speaking exclusively to Gambiana Sunday, Mamadi Kurang, leader for Youth for Change movement, said the country’s leadership needs to up their game by coming up with more skills centres and factories to improve the living standards in country.

According to him, the education system also needs to be revamped and introduce technical skills programmes by empowering sciences in lower grades to university to breed more scientists and engineers among others.

“There are so many things that if the country wants to develop it should get its own factories. Even small factories like Sankung Sillah and so on. The small factories are the ones that develop the newly emerging industrialized countries,” Mr Kurang said.

“Skills welding and carpentry help the country to develop and we need these skills in our education curriculum.

“There are no correct science labs in the schools across the country, and now if you want to build bridges and roads who will do it for you when you don’t have skill trained people in your country.

“So, the government should pump money into the skill development areas in the schools so that the children can have skills to develop the country one day,” he added.
