A grandmother has admitted subjecting her three-week-old granddaughter to female genital mutilation, an act that left the newborn dead.

Metta Wamch, along with her son and daughter-in-law, has been arrested over the baby girl’s death in Boboum Kunda, Wuli District.

Police said Wamch confessed to carrying out the brutal procedure and even led officers to the spot behind her home where it happened. She told investigators she threw away the razor blade in a toilet, but it has not been found.

The child’s father has also been taken into custody as part of the ongoing probe.

FGM is outlawed in The Gambia, yet the practice continues to claim young lives.

Police urged the public to stop the harmful ritual, warning it puts children’s lives and wellbeing at grave risk.
