The search for a missing Barra fisherman has intensified after he failed to return from a fishing trip on Sunday.

The man in his 30s is identified as Mustapha Ngum.

The native of Medina Kanuma in Lower Niumi District is feared to have drowned.

“The Association of the Fishermen in Barra teamed up with the youth to search for the drowned fisherman

whose boat capsized on Sunday afternoon in the waters of Barra during a fishing expedition, but their search was futile,” Niumi FM reported.

The man was reported to have been fishing with at least one other fisherman.

Niumi FM quoted an anonymous source saying: “there was a rift between the duo. There was an altercation between them before they went to harvest fish. As soon as they left moments ago, we heard and saw Mustapha screaming for help.

“He jumped out of his boat and we saw a running boat that landed on him in the waters and he drowned. Again, this unknown man managed to escape by swimming. There were three in numbers and after several struggles, the other man managed to save this unknown person while Mustapha remained in the water.”

Gambiana cannot confirm the truthfulness of the anonymous source quoted by Niumi FM statement.
