The violent land dispute between residents of Gunjur and Berending has erupted again after a brief lull.
Two people were reported to have been shot on Sunday as the residents clashed again. The two injured people were rushed to Brikama hospital with gun wounds and were now said to be in a stable condition.
“Despite the presence of ECOMIG, police and paramilitary officers, two more native of Gunjur have been shot by assailants from Berending this morning. The situation is very volatile and dangerous at the moment,” a concerned Gunjur resident told our reporter.
On Saturday one Buba Jammeh, a resident of Gunjur, was alleged to have been shot to death by a native of Berending in the communal clash.
The violence has continued despite the deployment of hundreds of armed security personnel to help bring an end to the violent land dispute.
“The youths of both Gunjur and Berending are in a position to wage a violent crisis and if the authorities don’t take appropriate measures the situation will be worse,” said another resident.
The Alkalo of Gunjur village, Omar Giggeh Darboe, who was contacted for comments referred our reporter to the police PRO as the issue was now a criminal investigation.
At the time of going to press the police PRO couldn’t be reached.
