The Ministry of Health has launched an investigation into the death of activist Ebrima Gassama, who suffered an asthma attack at Brikama District Hospital earlier this week.
In a statement on Friday, September 4, the Ministry expressed condolences to Gassama’s family, saying the death of a patient while receiving medical care is a matter of serious concern.
The Ministry said it was aware of concerns raised on social media about the circumstances of Gassama’s death, including questions about the medical response and power supply at the hospital.
The case has also prompted calls from rights groups and activists for an independent review. Gassama’s family has raised concerns about the treatment he received and reported a power outage during the incident. These accounts have not been independently verified.

Rights groups have called for further examination of the circumstances surrounding his treatment, as well as information on backup power arrangements at public health facilities.
The Ministry said it is examining the circumstances surrounding Gassama’s death and will take appropriate action based on its findings and recommendations.
It urged the public and media to avoid speculation while the process is ongoing and to respect Gassama’s family’s privacy.
