The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has launched verification checks after a Nigerian national claimed in a viral social media video that he obtained a Gambian passport after allegedly paying $1,500.

The man, identified by the GID as Evangelist Christian Chukka, claims the passport was issued in the name Omar Basir.

His allegations have triggered widespread discussion on social media.

But the GID said its initial searches have found no record corresponding to the details contained in the allegations.

The department said it was aware of the video and had received the claims “with the seriousness and urgency” they deserved.

“The Department has initiated verification searches within its passport database and, to date, has found no corresponding record matching the details alleged in the video,” the GID said.

The department said it was now seeking to establish the facts surrounding the matter, including determining whether the passport referred to in the video is authentic and, if so, the circumstances under which it may have been issued.

The GID urged members of the public and media organisations to exercise caution when sharing or reporting the allegations while the verification process remains ongoing.

It also warned against drawing premature conclusions or assigning blame to individuals or institutions before the facts have been established.

The controversy follows claims made by Mr Chukka in the viral video, in which he alleges that he paid $1,500 for the passport.

The department said it would provide the public with a “clear, accurate, and factual response” once its verification process is complete.

The department also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity and credibility of Gambian passports and other travel documents issued under its mandate.

It said it maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct and would take appropriate action under Gambian law if wrongdoing is established.
