Homes built on the Ebo Town wetland have been demolished, as authorities launch an investigation to identify and punish those behind the illegal sale of plots in the area.

A bulldozer, escorted by armed police officers, arrived at the site to flatten the structures.

Residents have long raised concerns over the construction of homes on the wetland, blaming it for the severe flooding that has affected the community. Their concerns prompted a visit by President Adama Barrow, who pledged to address the issue.

A panel is expected to be established to investigate and take punitive action against those involved in the sale of the land.

Unlike previous demolitions, this operation was relatively peaceful. Empty properties were torn down, while owners of occupied buildings had been served eviction notices in advance.

Speaking to reporters, Alagie Jobe warned that no home built on the wetland would be spared, calling the structures illegal.

“There is no property owner here who can produce a legal document allowing them to build on this land,” he said.

“This is one of the main causes of flooding in the town, because they are blocking the natural waterways,” he added.
