The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has refused to make public declared assets of presidential candidates citing privacy concerns.
The Commission’s spokesman Pa Makan Kahn said candidates have a right to privacy with regards to their assets.
According to the election rules candidates seeking the office of president should have to declare their assets. All the candidates have declared their assets to the IEC which they have refused to make public.
IEC spokesman Kahn: “One of the requirements is for aspirants to declare their assets to the IEC but not for publication.
“If a candidate chose to share his or her assets information to the public through the media, that is fine, but those who chose not to, have a right to privacy and theirs must not be published without their consent.
He added: “In any case the law does not require the IEC to publish their assets declaration.”
