Police have arrested an imam in Jarra Kani Kunda for breaching the lockdown that banned all public gatherings including congregational prayers.

The imam, who was detained in Masakonko, was accused of leading worshippers in prayers in contravention of the government order put in place to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

He was granted bail and may face a charge of unlawful assembly and violation of a public health emergency order.

The Gambia government last Friday declared “all public places of worship shall be closed” during the 21 days nationwide lockdown.

Police have been enforcing the lockdown and taking stringent actions against violators. Six businessmen were yesterday convicted and fined at the Kanifing Magistrate Court following their arrest for breaching the government’s price control.
