Ismaila Kone, also known as Ous, has denied killing 34-year-old Isatou Elizabeth Mendy.
Kone appeared before the Banjul Magistrates’ Court on Monday, where prosecutors accused him of killing Mendy on 17 August at Lovell Square Street in Banjul.
The charge was read to Kone in English and translated into Wolof. He told the court that he was not guilty.
However, the case was quickly transferred to the High Court after Principal Magistrate M. Krubally ruled that the Magistrates’ Court could not hear a murder case.
Kone was ordered to remain at Mile Two Central Prison while the case is transferred to the High Court Special Criminal Division.
The case follows Mendy’s death after an alleged assault in Banjul on 17 August. Police had earlier announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with the incident.
