The Lord Mayor of Leeds has presented Jaliba Kuyateh, The Gambia’s celebrated “King of Kora” and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, with the Leeds Shield during a special civic reception at the Civic Hall.

Kuyateh, widely regarded as one of Africa’s leading cultural ambassadors, was in the UK to support a Cultural Weekend Fundraiser organised by the Gambian Welfare Society Leeds.

He performed at the charity event free of charge, drawing Gambian and wider communities together in a celebration of music, culture, and unity.

The Lord Mayor hailed Kuyateh’s contribution to culture and community development, describing him as a symbol of international friendship and diversity.

Chairman of the Gambian Welfare Society Leeds, Yanks Sawo, said the honour reflected Kuyateh’s lifelong commitment to using music as a tool for peace and education.

“Mr Kuyateh’s presence here in Leeds is a powerful reminder of the ties that bind us across nations, cultures, and humanity,” he said.

The Cultural Weekend Fundraiser, which organisers described as a resounding success, raised vital funds for community programmes across Leeds.
