Joseph Colley has been appointed chairman of The Gambia’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), succeeding Alieu Momar Njai, who retired after nearly a decade of service.

Colley, who previously served as vice chairman, brings extensive experience to the role, having played a central part in the commission’s operations over the years. His appointment comes as the IEC begins preparations for key upcoming electoral activities.

He replaces Alieu Momar Njai, a veteran election chief who presided over two of the most pivotal elections in Gambian history—the 2016 vote that ended Yahya Jammeh’s 22-year rule, and the 2021 presidential election that secured a second term for President Adama Barrow.

Alongside Colley’s appointment, Cherno Jallow has been named the new vice chairman of the IEC.

The IEC is charged with organising and supervising all public elections and referenda in The Gambia, and its leadership plays a critical role in safeguarding the country’s democratic processes.
