The Justice Minister, Abubakarr Tambadou, has vowed to “vehemently prosecute Yankuba Touray for his contemptuous conduct at the TRRC”.
He said the actions of the former AFPRC Junta member at the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission on Wednesday morning was “disrespectful to the victims of his crimes”.
“Yankuba Touray acted in utter disrespect to the victims of his crimes. I’m shocked by his contemptuous conduct.
“We’ll prosecute Yankuba Touray for not only his refusal to testify before the TRRC, but also for other crimes he’s implicated in.
“We’ll prosecute Mr Touray and we’ll prosecute him vehemently.”
The Justice Minister added: that : “Seeing people storm the Kairaba Police Station to express their dissatisfaction with Yankuba Touray’s actions shows that the TRRC isn’t a government’s commission but a people’s commission.
“Hearing people chanting “Never Again” was heartwarming. But people should remain calm and allow the law to take its course.
Yankuba Touray, a former government minister in the Jammeh regime declined to testify before the TRRC hearing citing a constitutional provision that grant immunity to all members of the former AFPRC regime for all actions they might have undertaken while working for the government.
However the TRRC commission chairman said that the subpoena issued by the Commission did not violate the immunity Mr Touray is claiming. He ordered for the arrest of Yankuba Touray who is in the custody of the state pending a trial at the High Court.
