The Kanifing Municipal Council has launched an initiative to support women gardeners fight pests by providing pesticides worth over D40,000.

It comes as thousands of people including gardeners, farmers, traders, fisher persons, gathered at Bakau women’s garden to celebrate World Food Day, attended by the nation’s Agriculture Minister, Amie Fabureh and Representatives of FAO.

Pests are one of the main burdens of gardeners as they destroyed vegetables and plants costing thousands of dalasi.

Women at the celebration event praised mayor Talib Bensouda and his municipality for supporting them.

KMC in a statement said it sees the value in preserving and supporting Women’s Gardens and their Associations.

“The Council’s Department of Community Services is working to secure external funding to support the production of compost, charcoal briquettes and biochar in partnership with Women’s Garden Associations in the municipality,” the statement added.

The FAO, WFP and UN officials thanked KMC for their foresight in providing cold storage facilities in markets.
