Senior Counsel Lamin J. Darboe, lead defense lawyer for Ousainou Bojang and his sister Amie Bojang, has praised the Brufut community and Gambian citizens for their support following the siblings’ acquittal on murder charges.

Hundreds of supporters gathered in Brufut to welcome the Bojang siblings after their release from state custody, showing solidarity in what Darboe described as a testament to justice prevailing.

Speaking to reporters, Darboe thanked the public for their warm reception and reiterated his clients’ innocence.

“We thank the people of Brufut for the welcome they gave Ousainou Bojang and his sister Amie Bojang, who were accused of something the government knows they didn’t do,” Darboe said.

While the government has signaled its intention to appeal the High Court ruling, Darboe urged calm and patience.

“Let the appeal process continue; it’s better than creating violence in the country,” he added.

Darboe emphasized that his legal team took on the case not for financial gain but out of commitment to justice.

“Ousainou didn’t pay us a butut. This is not about money. If the government spreads falsehoods about someone and they come to me, money would not stop me from representing them,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of defending vulnerable individuals regardless of their financial resources.

“The country shouldn’t allow an innocent person to be jailed. Rich or poor, everyone has an equal right,” he said, adding that he had been inspired by support received abroad in countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom.

Criticizing the police investigation, Darboe said the judge highlighted deficiencies in the inquiry.

“The judge said the police refused to investigate properly, which is why they didn’t find out who killed the police officers. We will pursue the appeal process if necessary, including the Court of Appeal and potentially the Supreme Court. Hopefully, it won’t come to that because the judge covered everything in the case,” he noted.
