The legendary Senegalese guitarist Jimmy Mbaye passed away in Dakar on Tuesday, his family said. He was 68. 

Jimmy was the main guitarist and member of Youssou Ndour’s band, The Super Etoile. 

Youssou Ndour, his friend of 40 years, paid an emotional tribute on Facebook. 

He wrote: “Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un. I just lost my brother, friend, and companion of over 40 years. Pray for him!  Firdawsi Insha’Allah maestro.”

His death is a devastating loss for the Super Etoile family and the Senegal music community who have long revered his artistry and contributions. 

Last month, he performed performed in Banjul alongside Youssou Ndour at a gala dinner.
