Mama Kandeh, leader of opposition Gambia Democratic Congress, today celebrated his birthday as he turned 57.
Kandeh, who hails from the same region as President Adama Barrow, was born on this day in 1965, five months after The Gambia gained independence from Britain.
He shared the same birth year as President Barrow and former president Yahya Jammeh.
The political leaders and fierce rivals contested the 2016 presidential election that saw Barrow defeat Jammeh, ending his 22-year rule.
Kandeh, whose party is said to have led to the downfall of Jammeh, came third in the election.
His fans have been sending their birthday greetings on social media.
Momodou Sabally, senior UDP official, said: “It’s Honourable Mama Kandeh’s birthday today. We are celebrating a patriot.”
Momodou Cham alias MC Cham Jnr, GDC National Youth President said: “Happy Birthday to the GDC leader Hon. Mamma Kandeh. Please join me to wish our great and pragmatic leader Hon. Mamma Kandeh a Happy Birthday.
“You are a blessing to the Gambian people and you have proven beyond doubt that you are a great politician who cares for the people of this nation especially when the need arises, despite their political indifferences.
“Indeed, the GDC has made a great name for itself and has effectively contributed to the development of this country, thanks to your visionary leadership. May Allah continue to guide, bless, and protect you, your family and the entire nation. Happy Birthday Sir!” he added.
Momodou Jallow, a GDC supporter, described Kandeh as “the brightest man who is capable of transforming The Gambia into a modern classic nation.
“A warm and pleasant birthday to the brightest and best person I have ever known. You can lighten up a room with just your smile. I’m glad to have known you. Happy birthday. May God bless.”
