A man has been jailed for seven years for robbing a police officer.

Abdoulie Saine, a Senegalese national, was on Monday sentenced to seven years imprisonment by Justice Ebrima Baa Jaiteh of the High Court in Banjul.

The court heard how Saine robbed traffic police officer Lamin Darboe using a broken bottle in Serrekunda.

He stabbed the officer with the broken bottle and then took his Tecno mobile phone and a cash amount of D1,750.

The stolen phone and D610 cash were recovered after Saine was arrested in Dippakunda.

During the sentencing Justice Jaiteh said there is a rampant upsurge of violent crimes in the country and that the society needs protection from criminals like Saine.

The judge said he cannot hide his contempt for a criminal who used violence against his victims and robbed them of their possession.
