Mayor Ahmed Talib Bensouda has called for an end to violence following tensions between shopkeepers and ‘Wanterr’ vendors at the Serekunda market.
He emphasised that there is no justification for violent behaviour in resolving disagreements, reminding both parties that the Market Manager’s office, the market committee, and the Mayor’s office remain available to mediate disputes peacefully.
He urged all involved, both shopkeepers and vendors, to refrain from acts of violence or wilful damage to property. He also thanked the Municipal Police and Gambia Police Force for their efforts in restoring calm.
Mayor Bensouda highlighted the importance of keeping the streets around the market clear, as they provide vital access for security and customers.
He warned that obstructions by ‘Wanterr’ vendors risk suffocating the market and pose a security threat.

However, he expressed sympathy for temporary vendors trying to support their families during the festive period.
He said that Market Management will immediately make available ‘Mbari Pa Dembo’, an open space inside the market with capacity for up to 200 temporary vendors.
He also noted that the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) oversees 16 other markets outside the Serekunda area, many with ample vendor spaces.

He encouraged ‘Wanterr’ vendors to explore these alternatives through the Market Management office.
He urged all parties to cooperate with council authorities and maintain peace.
