United Democratic Party (UDP) firebrand Momodou MC Cham Jr. has sensationally quit the party with immediate effect, declaring it no longer lives up to the values that once inspired him.
In a statement, Cham said the UDP has drifted away from the principles of democracy, justice and renewal that convinced him to join in the first place.
“This decision is not made out of hostility,” he said, while thanking colleagues for their sacrifices and friendships. But he made clear his loyalty now lies with the Gambian people, not the UDP.
“At this critical moment in our nation’s journey, bold renewal and genuine commitment to the aspirations of the people are urgently needed,” he said, vowing to continue his political fight outside the party framework.
Mr Cham insisted he bore no grudges and wished the UDP well in its future battles. But his exit will spark speculation over his next move, and whether he will launch or join another political platform ahead of the 2026 elections.
