MC Cham Jr, a firebrand politician, has warned that President Barrow could appoint a son to succeed him in power if the draft constitution is passed into law.

According to him, the controversial draft constitution empowers that a president can only be succeeded by either the vice president or speaker of the national assembly.

He insisted that the Barrow administration has no interest in passing the draft constitution, rather they are only playing a game to hold the opposition responsible for rejecting the draft for its second time.

“What worries me in the draft constitution is that when he [Barrow] resigns, the vice president is the one who will continue leading the country. And his son can be a vice president because there is no provision in the draft that says your son cannot be a president. So, he can just resign and appoint his son as vice president to complete his term in office.

“And many people aren’t considering this in the draft constitution because Barrow has a matured son who can be appointed as vice president. The 1997 constitution states that if the president resigns, there should be a by-election within 90 days. But this draft says that if a president resigns, either the vice president or the speaker should lead the country,” he said.
