Gambia’s political leaders have failed yet again to reach an agreement over the country’s draft constitution in a mediation meeting in Abuja.
The three day meeting was called by former president Goodluck Jonathan who has led mediation efforts to build a consensus around the new constitution.
“The session is to afford Dr. Jonathan and the party leaders in attendance an opportunity to undertake a collective review of the progress that has been registered since the inter-party dialogue began in December 2020, with some specific recommendations carried forward to January 2021,” Goodluck Jonathan said in a statement on Thursday.
However despite the efforts of Mr Jonathan, the parties failed to reach an agreement on the contentious retroactive clause that bars President Barrow from seeking a new two five-year term in office.
