The United Democratic Party (UDP) has been hit with yet another blow after Yusupha Darboe of the party’s UK Chapter announced his resignation, citing the treatment of mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda.
In a resignation letter seen by Gambiana, Darboe said his decision to quit the party was influenced by the way Bensouda was handled, leading to his withdrawal from the flagbearer race and his resignation as National Campaign Secretary.
“I have come to the conclusion that I can no longer continue as a member of the UDP. My decision is primarily influenced by the manner in which Lord Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda has been treated,” Darboe wrote.

He described Bensouda as a leader he holds “in the highest regard” and lamented that the unfolding events within the party “do not align with the principles and values” he upholds.
Darboe, however, thanked his UDP colleagues and expressed respect for those still committed to the struggle for democracy, justice and development.
His resignation adds to growing turbulence within the opposition party following Bensouda’s shock withdrawal from the flagbearership contest and his subsequent resignation from a key executive role.
