More victims of the tragic migrant boat accident off the coast of Mauritania have been named on social media with friends and loved ones sharing photos and paying their tributes.

The names released so far are Amie Dubois, Ya Jojo Bojang, a young mother of one and a rapper who used the stage name Broozly.

The victims of Wednesday’s tragic incident come mainly from the towns of Barra and Essau in the North Bank Region.

The boat, which the U.N. said was carrying an estimated 150 migrants, left Barra on November 27.

Fifty-eight people were confirmed death after the boat heading to Canary Island in Spain capsized off the coast of Mauritania. Women and children were reported to be among the dead according to the International Organisation for Migration.

Eighty-three people, including ten children, survived the shipwreck after being rescued by the Mauritanian Coast Guard.

The Mauritanian officials said ten people were receiving “urgent” hospital treatment as the search and rescue efforts continued.

“All were being cared for in accordance with human solidarity, fraternity and African hospitality,” Interior Minister Mohamed Salem ould Merzoug told the Associated Press, adding that “Mauritania will investigate those responsible for ‘this drama’ including possible trafficking networks.”

The Gambia government released a statement yesterday expressing condolences to the victims’ families and said they were working with the UN and Mauritania authorities to investigate the tragic accident.

“The Gambia government is working with the United Nations International Organization for Migration and will dispatch a delegation to Mauritania at the earliest possible time to investigate and gather more information on the accident,” President Barrow said in a statement.

This tragedy is the single biggest loss of Gambian lives since the illegal migration route to Europe started in 2012.
