An MP has suggested a law to introduce mid-term election that will allow constituents to vote out “incompetent” national assembly members.
Yaya Sanyang, member for Latrikunda Sabiji, believed that some of his fellow national assembly members are not up to the job.
“I think Gambia need a law to introduce mid term elections for National assembly members. This will give electorate an opportunity to weed out all incompetent NAMS in the interest of the country,” said Mr Sanyang, a member of the opposition United Democratic Party.
He continued: “Five years is too much to waste the resources of tax payers without impacting their lives. The need to introduce mid term elections is urgent and we need to escalate the urgency of the matter.
“Two years in to your five year mandate Gambians should know if you’re a serious MP or you are guided by partisan tricks and governance.”
Parliamentarians have come under intense public criticism after they proposed increasing their salaries and allowances amid an economic crisis.
They have been accused of being greedy and self-serving while thousands of Gambians struggle to make ends meet.
