The Gambian National Assembly Members (NAMs) and technical staff of the Assembly have embarked on a three-day pre-budget retreat following the presentation of the 2025 Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure by the Minister of Finance.
Supported by International IDEA and the European Union (EU), the training is aimed at strengthening fiscal oversight and resource allocation capabilities.
Clerk of the National Assembly, Momodou Sise, stressed the importance of budget scrutiny.
“Honourable Members must interrogate the draft estimates to ensure they reflect the aspirations of the citizens.
“The outcomes of this training will also enable effective monitoring of appropriated funds through oversight mechanisms during the implementation year.”
The initiative is part of a broader collaboration with International IDEA and the EU to bolster The Gambia’s democratic institutions. Ms Jainaba Faye, Country director for International IDEA, highlighted the training’s purpose.
She said: “The main goal is to strengthen the oversight function of the National Assembly and its Committees to deliver an expanded economy focused on creating greater national wealth and better livelihoods.”
Similarly, the EU Ambassador to The Gambia, Immaculada Roca I Cortes, reiterated the EU’s commitment to institutional development.
“By strengthening the National Assembly’s role in budget oversight, we ensure a more inclusive and sustainable future for all,” she said.
In his opening statement, Fabakary Tombong Jatta, Speaker of the National Assembly, called on lawmakers to actively engage during the retreat.
“Our duty is to safeguard public funds, ensure social equity, and promote economic stability.”
