The National Water and Electricity Company has launched a smart meter replacement programme, aiming to improve efficiency, reduce billing errors, and give customers more control over their water consumption.

The exercise, which began in Banjul, has now moved to Bakau, Combos, and other areas, covering neighborhoods including Carniping, South Estate, Layout, and Dalabar.

Speaking to the media during a site visit, Demba Joum, Senior Commercial Manager for NAWEC’s Water and Sewage Business Unit, explained that the new meters are designed to replace the old analogue systems.

“These smart meters can operate in three modes,” he stated.

“They can be set to Automated Meter Reading (AMI), read with a handheld device (AMR), or manually for old meters still in use. The AMI system allows readings to be taken remotely from our offices, while the AMR system collects data as staff pass by properties, eliminating the need to enter homes.”

Currently, some meters in Bakau still require manual reading, but NAWEC plans to replace all analogue meters with smart ones as stocks arrive. The replacement programme is free for customers and funded through a World Bank-supported project managed by GIRAV, with NAWEC supervising the installations.

He highlighted the benefits of the new system. Faulty or old meters can hide internal leaks, causing customers to receive inflated bills.

Smart meters allow accurate readings, help detect leaks early, and support better budgeting.

“Customers no longer need to wait for meter readers to enter their homes,” he said.

“All readings can now be captured remotely, uploaded to our billing system, and ensure accurate consumption tracking.”

The smart meters, manufactured by Xylem and supported by Lesson-type software for data collection, are part of NAWEC’s broader efforts to embrace modern technology and enhance customer satisfaction.

“By digitalising our water meter system, we are reducing errors, improving service efficiency, and ultimately benefiting both NAWEC and our customers,” he said.
