Nigerian chef Hilda Baci has broken the world record for cooking the largest ever pot of jollof rice in Lagos last week.
Guinness World Records (GWR) confirmed on social media that the dish weighed a staggering 8,780kg.
After nine hours of cooking, the giant pot nearly jeopardized the attempt when it buckled while being lifted onto a crane—but thankfully, none of the rice was spilled.

Baci celebrated the achievement, thanking her team and supporters: “This moment isn’t just mine… it belongs to all of us.”
The record-breaking recipe included 4,000kg of rice, 500 cartons of tomato paste, 600kg of onions, and 168kg of goat meat, all cooked in a custom-made 23,000-litre pot.
Thousands of spectators gathered to witness the feat, which was later served in portions to the crowd.

Baci credited her team of 10 chefs and 300 people involved in manufacturing the massive steel vessel, praising their “unity, love, and collective strength.”
She said the planning for the challenge took a year, highlighting the cultural significance of jollof rice: “We [Nigerians] are the giant of Africa, and jollof is a food that everybody knows Africans for. It would make sense if we had the biggest pot of jollof rice—it would be nice for the country.”

Baci, who previously held the world record for the longest cooking marathon in 2023, continues to cement her status as a national and international culinary sensation.
