Mourners have gathered in Brikama to pay their final respects to Abdoulaye Jammeh, leader of the National Unity Party (NUP), who was laid to rest at the Neme cemetery on Sunday.
Jammeh, who passed away at Afrimed Hospital, was remembered as a pious Muslim, a kind and humble man, and a generous figure deeply respected by those who knew him.
He led the NUP as its presidential candidate in the 2021 election and was seen as a quiet but principled voice in Gambian politics.
Before entering political life, Jammeh served as Director-General of the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) for over nine years.
He was widely credited with significant improvements in the country’s aviation sector during his tenure.
His passing has been described as a major loss to both the political and civil service communities in The Gambia.
