Omar Saibo, spokesperson for Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA), has been detained following chaotic scenes at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, where 23 protesters were remanded after their appearance.

Saibo was among several people arrested after tensions flared outside the courthouse.

Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, with some requiring medical evacuation, including prominent activist Madi Jobarteh.

As the detainees were escorted into prison vans, protesters chanted “power to the people.”
