Police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of a woman in the Upper River Region.

The suspect, Muhammed Camara, is accused of stabbing Habibatou Jallow to death on September 6, 2024, following an altercation at a local gathering.

Witnesses reported hearing a commotion before the incident, leading to an emergency call to the authorities. Jallow was pronounced dead at the scene due to multiple stab wounds.

Camara was apprehended on October 7 in neighbouring Senegal after being recognised by a local resident who had seen police alerts about the suspect.

The resident promptly alerted the Basse Police, who swiftly responded and took Camara into custody without incident.

Following the stabbing, Camara reportedly fled to Willingara in Senegal, believing he could avoid capture. Police confirmed he had been evading law enforcement for several weeks.

Police commended the efforts of the community member who helped identify and report the suspect, emphasising that such vigilance is crucial in the fight against crime.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged murder is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward. “Your information could be vital,” police said.
