The Inspector General of Police, Mamour Jobe, was set upon by an angry mob on Saturday in Gunjur where a violent communal clash had claimed the life of one protester and injured scores of others.
IGP Jobe was visiting Gunjur Police Station to assess the security situation in the village when an angry mob armed with machetes and stones stormed the police station demanding justice for Buba Jammeh who was killed on Saturday in a communal clash between residents of Gunjur and Berending.
The IGP’s car was pelted with stones when the mob spotted it pulling over at the station. Riot police had to escort him to safety.
Meanwhile the clash erupted again on Sunday despite the heavy presence of security personnel and two people were hospitalised after sustaining gunshot injuries. Scores of rioters have been arrested as the police restored order.
The violence has continued despite the deployment of hundreds of armed security personnel to help bring an end to the violent land dispute.
“The youths of both Gunjur and Berending are in a position to wage a violent crisis and if the authorities don’t take appropriate measures the situation will be worse,” said another resident.
The Alkalo of Gunjur village, Omar Giggeh Darboe, who was contacted for comments referred our reporter to the police PRO as the issue was now a criminal investigation.
At the time of going to press the police PRO couldn’t be reached.
