
Police in Wellingara have launched an investigation into the death of a young man who was electrocuted while cutting branches from a mango tree on Tuesday, 12 August 2025.
Preliminary findings indicate that the victim, identified as Mattarr Bittaye, aged in his early 20s and a resident of Sinchu Sorrie, came into contact with a NAWEC electrical cable running through the tree, resulting in a fatal electric shock.
Emergency responders from the Serekunda Fire Service Station, assisted by NAWEC staff, retrieved the body, which was later pronounced dead at Bundung Hospital.
Police say inquiries are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
