The Gambia Police Force has launched an investigation into the alleged circulation of suspected counterfeit British pounds at several Bureau de Change outlets in the Senegambia area.
Police said investigations began on Wednesday, 31 December 2025, following complaints from forex operators along the Senegambia Strip.
Preliminary findings indicate that two individuals, who arrived separately from the United Kingdom in December, were in possession of British pounds, portions of which were allegedly presented for exchange at multiple outlets.
Investigators have so far recovered £6,040, while an outstanding £460 remains unaccounted for. Police said efforts are ongoing to trace the remaining amount.

Eight Bureau de Change outlets are reported to have been affected. While some operators were unable to identify those involved, others provided information that aided the investigation. Statements have been obtained from persons of interest.
Police also confirmed that a third individual was briefly detained to assist with inquiries but was later released after investigations found no evidence linking him to the suspected offence beyond social association.
Investigations are continuing to verify the recovered currency, establish accountability for the missing amount and determine the appropriate legal action.
Police assured the public that updates will be provided as the case progresses.
