The Gambia Police Force has warned against breaching the peace as drivers staged protest on Monday.
In a statement police said that “any driver who chooses to go on the proposed sit-down should park their vehicle at a private location.
“On the other hand, all commercial drivers who wish to continue performing their functions, SHOULD NOT be obstructed.
“The Gambia Police Force is committed to providing security to those that are not part of the sit-down strike. Any one found breaching the peace and security trying to stop commercial drivers from plying the road will be dealt with accordingly.”
The Gambia Transport Union said it is declaring a sit-down strike throughout the country on Monday 12 September.
The nationwide protest is over high price of fuel, high price of toll fee at the Senegambia Bridge, the many police checkpoints and expensive mandatory fines on the roads.
“We are finally calling on all the commercial drivers, commercial transport owners, and all Garage attendees across the country to sit at their homes until the above-mentioned constraints are resolved,” Omar Ceesay, President of The Gambia Transport Union said.
