President Adama Barrow has sent condolences to the family of the late football legend Alhajie Momodou Njie, well-known as Biri Biri.

Mr Njie died today at the age of 72 at the Senegalese capital, Dakar, after suffering from a short illness.

State House said in a statement on Sunday: “His Excellency, Adama Barrow has learnt with deep sorrow the passing away of Gambian football legend, Alhajie Momodou Njie, commonly known as Biri Biri, who died today, 19th July 2020, in Dakar.”

“On behalf of his government, the people of The Gambia and on his own behalf, President Adama Barrow expresses his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, friends and the entire sporting fraternity.

“President Barrow prays that Allah receives his gentle soul in Jannahtul Firdausi,” the statement added.

Tributes have been pouring in for the deceased both locally and internationally. 

Biri Biri is not only a football legend and trailblazer, for many he is Gambia’s greatest footballer of all time.
