
President Adama Barrow today received renowned musician Sona Jobarteh and her team on a courtesy visit to the State House in Banjul.
The Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Abdoulie Jobe, briefed the President on discussions with Dr Jobarteh, who has been appointed by the Gambia Tourism Board as the Brand Roaming Ambassador for Destination Gambia.
Her role will focus on promoting and marketing tourism in the country.
Dr Jobarteh expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to showcase The Gambia as a prime destination for tourists and investors.
She also highlighted the work of The Gambia Academy, an institution she founded to train and empower young people with skills for the future.
President Barrow congratulated Dr Jobarteh on her official recognition and acknowledged the challenges faced in marketing the country abroad.
He emphasised the peaceful nature of Gambians, the country’s beautiful beaches, and rich culture as key attractions for visitors.
Speaking on the importance of innovation, President Barrow said:”In the 21st century, The Gambia must do things differently. I am pleased to learn about your academy’s role in diversifying skills development, which aligns with my government’s development agenda.”
The President also praised Gambians returning home to invest, stressing that with the right mindset, every Gambian has a role to play in national development.
After watching a performance by students from The Gambia Academy, President Barrow encouraged the young performers to remain patient and committed to their education as they prepare for their future.
Tourism remains a vital sector for The Gambia’s economy, contributing approximately 20% of GDP and providing 17.3% of employment.
