A schoolboy is fighting for his life after he was struck by a speeding commercial vehicle near Ice Man Junction on Friday, prompting the arrest of the driver.
The vehicle, bearing registration number KM 4766 B, was impounded following the incident, while the driver was taken into custody by officers of the Kanifing Police Intervention Unit.
Witnesses at the scene alleged that the driver was travelling at high speed and attempting to overtake other vehicles moments before the collision.
“He was overspeeding,” one eyewitness told Gambiana.
Another witness pointed to bloodstains on the road where the child reportedly fell after being hit.
“This is where the boy fell down,” the witness said, adding: “May he make it in life again.”
A nearby shopkeeper said he rushed outside after hearing the impact.
“I was inside my shop when I heard a loud noise. When I came out, I found the boy lying on the ground,” the witness said.
The boy was rushed for medical treatment, where he remains in critical condition, according to witnesses.
Police have arrested the driver as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash continue.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns among residents over reckless driving and excessive speeding on busy roads in the Kanifing area.
