El Malick Ndiaye has resigned from his position as President of Senegal’s National Assembly, saying the decision was guided by “the higher interest of the Nation.”

In a statement released on Saturday, Ndiaye said his resignation followed “deep reflection” and was motivated by his commitment to state institutions, public responsibility, and national stability.

“This decision stems from a personal choice, guided above all by my conception of institutions, public responsibility, and the higher interest of the Nation,” he stated.

Ndiaye said he had dedicated his tenure to strengthening the National Assembly through transparency, oversight, modernisation, and enhancing the influence of the Senegalese Parliament both nationally and internationally.

He thanked lawmakers from both the ruling majority and opposition, parliamentary staff, members of his cabinet, and the Senegalese people for their support during his time in office.

The outgoing parliamentary leader also expressed gratitude to members and supporters of Senegal’s ruling party, PASTEF, under whose banner he was elected.

“As I leave this high office, I remain deeply convinced that the stability of our institutions, respect for republican dialogue, the preservation of civil peace, national cohesion, and the higher interest of Senegal must remain, under all circumstances, our common compass,” Ndiaye said.

He added that he would continue serving Senegal and contributing to the country’s democracy and national development despite stepping down from the role.

Ndiaye concluded his statement by calling for peace, unity, justice, and prosperity for Senegal.

A successor is expected to be elected on Tuesday, 26 May, when the National Assembly reconvenes following a tumultuous week that saw Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko dismissed and the government dissolved.
