Seven people have been arrested for allegedly peddling illegal medicines in the Greater Banjul Area 

The arrest came days after the country’s Medicines Control Agency (GMCA) launched a clampdown on counterfeit drugs and illegal medicine sellers.

The seven are detained at the police headquaters in Banjul, where they are being processed.

“The recent exercise was conducted on the 12 th May 2021, which led to the arrest of seven peddlers. The culprits are currently being processed at the Banjul Police Station for prosecution ” the GMCA  said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the agency said it “conducted such exercise at the Ferry Terminal in 2018 and the peddlers caught were all apprehended and given stern warning to desist from such illegal practice.

“Similar exercises were also conducted at the Westfield, Serrekunda Market and Brikama Market in 2019 and the culprits were prosecuted and convicted.”
