The Spanish embassy in Banjul has warned Gambian migrant workers involved in a circular migration pilot programme that overstaying their work visas could have serious consequences and threaten the scheme.
In a letter dated 10 September, the embassy said only six of the workers had returned to the Gambia, while more than 31 were reported to have absconded.
Authorities are in contact with the remaining workers in Spain, urging them to return before the 6 October deadline.
Some workers have delayed their return due to administrative issues, the letter added.
The embassy stressed that returning on time is essential to remain eligible for future employment under the programme.
It said overstaying violates Spanish and EU immigration rules and warned that failure to comply could jeopardise opportunities for thousands of Gambians seeking legal work in Europe.
