Teachers Union of The Gambia has announced a fresh strike over low pay and accused the government of failing to respect their demands.
Last year the union staged similar strike to demand better pay for teachers following the government 30 per cent salary increment for civil servants.
Meanwhile, Ismaila Ceesay, the union’s president said teachers posted in other parts of the country are left to fend for themselves without allowances.
“In respect, government is found to have deliberately failed to effect the 30% salary increment on the zonal allowances which contravenes the spirit and letter of chapter 5, section III of the General Orders, precisely
“To its dismay and utmost surprise, government has neither responded nor acknowledged receipt of our demands after two weeks,” he told Gambiana.
“In view of the aforementioned, the union hereby request teachers across the country to stay home or not report to work until we hear from government accordingly.
“Equally, the union has received with grave concern the exclusion of support staff, such as regional education drivers from payment of double shift allowance when the bosses who they drive are paid such allowances while engaging on same mission,” he added.
