The Gambia Teachers Union president has told the government that failure to implement and fulfil their demands would lead them to another sit-down strike.

The union leader’s comment comes as it ended its weeklong sit-down strike after coming into agreement with the government on key demands including the 30% increment allowance and review of the education ministry’s hardship allowance for teachers.

“One thing I can make very clear is that if they [the government] failed to meet the demands we have agreed, we will go on strike.

“There is nothing that can stop us from going on strike. What I can tell you confidently is that last year we went on strike, but before we normally go on strike, we always ensure that we exhaust all the local remedies. We followed the due process.

“We do the necessary things that need to be done like meeting them and discussing [our demands]. And when they’re reluctant to meet them, then we can call on our teachers to go on sit-down strike,” Ismaila S  Ceesay, president of The Gambia Teachers Union told reporters at a news conference today (9 January) held at the teachers union’s head office in Kanifing.
